Barnard Zine Library News

This week we added zines about a Canadian quarantining in Mexico, a summer of a historically straight women pursuing and being pursued by women, queering classics, dealing with a broken wrist, fatphobia and self love, raw and vegan cooking, and vintage clip art collages.

This week we're adding photography zines made by zine assistant Grace Li BC '24. The zines depict people, dogs, and scenes in Barcelona, Beijing, New Hampshire, and other locations.

We added zines documenting one artist's life in zines and experiencing racist microaggressions in her day to day, along with a nine-year-old girl's guide to cat-having and thoughts about delayed onset homosexuality.

This week we added zines about quarantine, chronic illnesses, tarot, Covid mourning, Covid parenting, mad zining, loving your own body, and going offline, and interviews with radical librarians and technologists.

This week we added zines about feminism and anger, suicide prevention, a white 100-year-old antiracist activist, mangosteens and durian, the likes and dislikes of a roller derby skating Australian librarian, a Portland OR college women's empowerment group. and a Canadian college student's loves: cooking and the CBC.

We added zines from a senior visual art thesis, activities to do in the rain, alternative back pain treatments, and reflections on the Universal Human Rights Declaration 70 years later by youth of color.

Today we added zines about WBAR and the DHC and zines donated by Bitch Media about feminism, navigating life with a facial deformity, menstruation, sex trafficking, scams, and waiting for health news.

This week we added zines about revolution, DIY radio, 1996 computer geekery, feminist health, reproductive rights, a mass kidnapping and likely murder in Mexico, and sobriety in punk/activist scenes.

This week we added zines about cooking and family lore, crafting, feminism, sex, walking while femme, riot grrrl music, library work and culture, and the New Zealand zine scene. 

This week we added zines about questionable Tinder profile pics, returning to your suburban hometown, surviving rape but never being able to forget it, a former teen mom's relationship with her daughter's father, and hard breakups.

This week we added zines about DIY zine making, tech: you do want FRIES with that, punk life, thoughts on zine making ten years in, Stone Sour fandom, ants, music, an LA teenhood with boys, food and family, and the history of a radical choir including its performances at the WTO protests.

This week we added zines about the 1968 Olympics, quarantined zinesters reviewing zines, growing up queer in the Midwest, Brooklyn trans kids, Black women's relationships with their bodies, a Bengali-American woman's take on her hair, colonialism's impact on a teacher of color, talking to family members with conservative politics, a zine library in Seattle, the history of critical pedagogy in librarianship, moving away from home and coming into one's own, and sex.

This week we added zines about an artist's stream of conscious regarding zines and work, mugs, doing a lot of yoga while living with your parents before starting grad school, and flash fiction inspired by old photographs

This week we added zines about 9/11 and its anti-Muslim aftermath, a day in the life of Edinburghers, finals weeks for a substance abuser during covid, self-perception, cat love, time in a psychiatric hospital, and sustainable fashion, along with art collages, vegan recipes, and illustrated Mountain Goats lyrics.

This week we added zines about ancestors, life in Palestine, migraines, life in Pune, life for women in Lebanon, menopausal vengeance, sneaking books into Palestine, the politics of sex work, good things, and traveling alone while female.

This week we added zines about South Asian punks in Switzerland, pandemic life for a single mom in Berkeley homeschooling her kid and enduring a breakup, and a Brooklyn desi DJ processing abuse.

This week we added zines about being sick with Covid, zine culture and community, parenting a teen in quarantine, preparing to return to work at work, political protests during lockdown and complicated ancestry.

This week we added zines critiquing capitalism, anti-Black racism, the patriarchy, hierarchy, imperialism, and time as a construct that rules our lives. The zines are pro affinity, relationship building, mutual aid, and care.

This week we added zines about sobriety, savagery, the good and the bad, trauma aware tattooing, sex work, queer friendships, radical Filipines, antiviolence work, and zine reviews.

This week we added zines about the quarantine experience in New Paltz, AFI, My Chemical Romance, teen girl photos, mugs, how to find a therapist, periods, moving bodies from where they died to the funeral home, abortions, and things that are new.

This week we added zines about college life as filtered through Facebook, missing friends in Covid times, South Asian feminism, pandemic behind bars, depression, the aftermath of incest, and patterns for 7-day candle prayers. 

We added zines from Columbia organizations (South Asian Feminisms Alliance and IRWGS que(e)ry collective), daily comics from a middle-aged lesbian cappuccino enthusiast, zines and coloring books from Mexico and Chile about animals, trees, sex, and feminism; an APA citation primer; a zine about a public library, and a 2007 anarchafeminist comp zine from Ireland.

This week we added zines about Asian American diaspora, moving karaoke and group dance activities online during quarantine, the manager of Chicago zine hub Quimby's,  "bad" zines, poems about lovers, River Phoenix and Gus Van Sant, an anxious New Zealand teen, gender nonconformity, self-care for teens, and Sri Lankan architect Minnette de Silva.

This week we added zines about community care, corporate feminism, activism in education, climate change, life after a brain injury, coming out, Animal Crossing appreciation (in 2009), gender identity and fashion, a break-up, and daily comics by a lesbian foodie and cat lady in LA.

This week we added zines made for classes: Black Feminist Portal, Feminist Architecture History, Applications in Climate and Society, and Dance Criticism plus minicomics about polyamory and sisters who visit a forest in a warehouse and fanzines about manicures and Cyndi Lauper.

This week we added a zine about herbal medications for the Real Housewives of SLC, and four issues of a zine by a queer, polyamorous nonbinary white person with Graves disease recounting their life and loves.

We added zines about relationship souvenirs, pandemic life through photographs, intergenerational space pirates, incarcerated Black women, dating, men peer educating men about accountability, civil rights survey responses from white people, prison abolition, President Trump's 75th-100th days in office, and moving to a new city.

This week we added zines about dating and going about your life while being gender-nonconfirming and polyamorous, soda fandom, tips for relaxation, a genderqueer Chicanx artist's gay root, and evidence-based medicine and its friends.

This week we added zines about the beginnings of hope as people are starting to get vaccinated, chronic illness likened to vampirism, queer and trans students of color at Barnumbia, nephrotic syndrome, building community through zine workshops, the band Idlewild, and a sketchy zine about justice for accusers and the accused of intimate violence.

We added zines about Zoom life, giving birth during the pandemic, work and depression for a librarian in North Carolina, dating and harassment, a Singaporean and Hong Konger in New York missing dim sum, return-to-work anxiety and non-monogamous dating, a quarantine birthday, a Black incarcerated woman in the mid-twentieth century, and Japanese feminism.

We added zines about Blasian women icons, Barnard first year pandemic experiences and TV picks, antisemitism in the US, quarantine life for a roller derby playing librarian in Australia, a daily photography project, and fascism in New Zealand.                                                  .

We added zines by Big Problems students about quarantine life, 2020 music, survival tips, schooling from home, and K-Pop and a photography zine by a long-time zine maker documenting her 2020.

We've added zines about quarantine life for a Korean-American mother and daughter, reflections on friendship about ten years out from undergrad, nonbinary identity, humor and popular culture from a Beverly Hills perspective, how your cell phone is spying on you, and older zines about making one's punk, fat, queer, or gender nonconforming or way in the world, along with a button and zine catalog.

We added zines about police brutality against Black women, Singaporean food, quarantine life through photographs, residual brain fog from Covid, how to build an art collective, connecting with nature during lockdown, and International Women's Day and teen feminism in Greece, a personal sports history, and collage art.

We added zines from Big Problems: Making Sense of 2020 classes, including a letter of critique, a pandemic film list, DIY survival guides, and zines by non-Barnard creators about third culture kids, 2021 resolutions, coronavirus parenting, popular culture, and a zine on the Black Lives Matter movement by a zine returning after a 21-year hiatus.

We added zines about equity in education, fast fashion, empathy, monuments (in English and Spanish), quarantine time, Keanu Reeves in conversation with Pema Chödrön, an American in Germany, an Ohio housewife who has had it with Donald Trump, and overthrowing your job.

This week we added zines by students in Barnard's Pre-College Program in the Young Women's Leadership Initiative (YWLI) track offered by the Athena Center and the latest issue of the Barnard Zine Club zine, Sticks & Stones #19: Found. The YWLI zines confront inequities and injustice in education, stereotypes, gun violence, discrimination against transgender people, reproductive justice, quaggas, and the general blight of capitalism.

We added zines about dating, sex, breakups, touring with a band, traveling around African countries, hapa and mixed race identities, the joys of laying out a zine using real scissors and glue, and poems about losing your mother in your 20s.

This week we added zines about a Kinsey 5 girl falling in love with a man while studying abroad in France, a Spanish lesbian in Montréal writing in English and French, DIY reproductive health with herbs, reproductive justice, the masculine and feminine in punk,  and how to make paper stars (thereby soothing your soul).

This week we added zines about navigating holidays with family, solo living during quarantine, police budgets in Connecticut related to percentage of white residents, making music when you can't practice with your band, pandemic life for middle schoolers in Abu Dhabi, the US election, and Onion-like stories from a US expat in Berlin.

This week we added zines about famous people who share the same name, feeling the sad, pandemic coping for kids, quarantine life in Berlin (The Onion style), queer quarantine TV choices, female-bodied genderqueer femme gay boi Gemini rising identity, and ex-boifriends.

This week we added zines about non-electoral activism, policing in libraries, May Day in Austria under quarantine, ICE watch, police abolition, worldwide deities, growth, small sources of joy, and the Black Lives Matter movement in Ireland.

This week we added zines about carceral abolition, asexual crush types, quarantine madness, the ally industrial complex, femme sex workers, alternatives to calling the police, an early 20th century incarcerated Black woman, voting as upholding colonial systems, and science fiction.

This week we added zines from the US and Poland about capitalism and Covid, making political art, building a DIY graywater reclamation hand washing station, 1980s nostalgia, pet cats, affordable routes to home ownership, how the male gaze may influence sexuality, and a late 1980s zine about literature and libraries.

This week we added zines about queer Scottish feminists and the Black Lives Matter movement, archival research on queer addicts, political history of needlecraft, anxiety and depression exacerbated by quarantine, social distancing, teenage girl art and activism, and Ramadan food and activities.

This week we added zines about quarantine life, incarcerated Black and indigenous children and Covid-19, Brussels street pizza, health and queer sexuality in the Midwest, rage at Trump administration pandemic policies, what it's like to be a flight attendant, and procrastinating art making, also a compilation of mail art and a Black hair products coloring book.

This week we added zines and minicomics about quarantine life in New Orleans and Belgium and a DIY zine about caring for others, as well as for yourself. 

This week we added quarantine-themed zines from the US and Australia about anxiety and depression, home projects, cooking and eating, and Zooming to school.

This week we added zines about quarantine life for a Finnish woman in the UK, Black women's lives, absorbing the reality of Covid-19 deaths, listening to nature and missing a friend, women activists in US history, why worrying about litter is worrying about the wrong thing, Texas legislative opportunism against abortion access (en español), and My Chemical Romance fandom from queer Zoomers, and an abortion-positive coloring book.

This week we cataloged zines about quarantine and quarantunes, covid zinester times, theater artists under quarantine, a prior pandemic that didn't make headlines when it claimed 100K lives in the US, quarantine activities, popular culture humor, and life in Brooklyn during the war on Black lives.

This week we added zines about crystals, erasers, domestic projects under quarantine, radical student life at Barnard and Columbia, care for Black lives during coronavirus times, spending time alone, keeping police out of libraries, how grief manifests when you don't let it manifest, and how Texas law makers took advantage of quarantine to prevent surgical abortion access.

This week we added zines about how to respectfully ask someone to comply with Covid-19 hygiene guidelines, Black teen girl (and trans and nonbinary) life in quarantine, decarceration, Ahmaud Arbery, the gifts and woes of online teaching, community-mindedness, harnessing grief, and essential workers going on strike.

This week we added quaranzines about Black Lives Matter, the deep web, protest safety, getting your 💩 together, things that matter during quarantine, and CUNY's pandemic response.

This week we added quarantine zines about Black womanhood, longing for home, socially distant friend interactions, decluttering, queer historical hookups, free stores, inside life, and how working class family members are dealing with essential work, and an air dancer flip book.

This week we added zines about the pandemic driving people to kombucha, dolphin drawing, staying inside, consuming a lot of media, attempting to care for themselves, and embracing it as a boon for neurodiverse introverts, as well as a screed by an Irish lesbian affirming her sexuality, which apparently you have to do in Ireland.

This week we added zines about how introverts would design the working world (our moment has arrived!), grim reaper problems, wearing a face mask with glasses, Starbucks worker pandemic life, essential worker life, thirsty queer sailors from the USNS Comfort, pandemic librarianing in Australia, and isolation...with a partner.

This week we added a lot of zines that are about the ups and downs of quarantine life--and one zine about having impostor syndrome in comedy improv.

This week we added zines about going to school from going to school from twelve hours in the future, T-shirts worn during quarantine, Asian American coronavirus experiences, London street scenes, what the coronavirus is and how to deal with it (in English and español), a vision of the future if we minimize global warming, zines purchased during the pandemic, the passing of a beloved cat during the early days of social distancing, and body image during the crisis: don't diet!

We've added ten new pandemic zines this week. They're about making the best of things, Zooming art school, how life is different under quarantine, how ventilators work, isolated living, what skateboarders in the UK are doing to occupy their time, weekly news rundowns, meditating while Black, and what service workers in PDX are up to while they're unemployed.

This week added ten more COVID-19 zines to our collection. They are about the politics of face masks in Hong Kong, how quarantine looks to a cat (stop touching my touch beans!), home office problems, parents observing social distance, parenting a kindergartner while quarantined, growing seeds, what's good and bad about social distancing, neighborhood mutual (in German), and rural life for a working class Columbia alum, plus boredom tweets collaged over a SimCity background by an artist from Istanbul.

We're adding zines to our COVID-19 collection about the greater implications of festivals like Coachella being canceled, quarantine life, fantasizing about life after quarantine, the massive scope of the coronavirus, how to upcycle food waste, annoying neighbors, giving up shaving body hair because of social isolation, a small moment of connection with a stranger, and despite being in a privileged position, being overwhelmed with feelings.

We added zines about quarantine rituals, the view from the kitchen window, missing and not missing the outside world, boredom, and mindfulness practices.

We're adding zines about anti-Asian racism and the model minority myth, parenting kids and being away from your aging parents during quarantine, social closeness, missing people and things while maxing out on mass media, missing one's bagelry, taking responsibility for complicity, migrant farmworkers' conditions during the coronavirus, a mother's sexy self, and having hope for the future.

This time we added zines about Barnard Bartending (RIP), witchery, failure, microaggressions, midlife crises, a breakup, eating disorders and addiction, things that make you happen, and vegan eating and Xicanx identities.

This week we add zines about urban gardening, putting food on a tray for an isolating family member, COVID-19 coping strategies, feeling the crushing weight of the world, US healthcare challenges, making a Passover Seder for one, longing for love while isolated, moving during quarantine, facial expressions hidden by masks, anger at the state of US politics and ICE activities, and evolving isolation thoughts, along with a collective zine by roommates detailing their life under quarantine, including riding the subway and food insecurity.

We're adding zines to our library about Millennial lyfe, sober bicycle touring, Unitarianism, queer/trans bible study, quarantine activities, acupuncture practice and Orientalism, missing college during quarantine, being an academic librarian as the shut down began, and moving from Indiana to Arizona, along with poems by a trans man imagining boyhood.

This time we added zines about COVID19 care among Asian American feminists, wearing masks in Hong Kong and the US, COVID19 self-care practices among yoga practitioners, what is in anthropomorphic paintings from the US National Gallery of Art's hearts, gardening with youth at Rikers, mushrooms, and the database Sci-Hub.

This week we added zines about mask making, social distance, handling the pandemic badly, anti-Asian racism, tarot in times of trauma, a Soviet engineer, the quest for perfect skin, and targeted ads on Facebook.

Today we're added zines about tween love, Latina artists, rage against childhood bullies, rage against Brett Kavanaugh, self-acceptance, dating, reading, revenge porn, board games, and mujer life.

This week we added zines about disability and sexuality, a residency in the Arctic, protest signs, fertility awareness, mujer life, vaginal ecology, and a trip to Japan, along with Beatles-inspired fiction, a witchy 2019 calendar, and a photo file of protest signs.

This week we added zines about kicking synthetic hormone birth control, Hurricane Irma, sex, dropping out of high school and homeschooling, general punkness, and artist's model life, and erotic fiction about the NSA.

This week we added zines about COVID-19, early 1990s riot grrrliness, rape, banana slugs, lesbians, 1990s popular culture, and sexism in the 1990s punk scene, along with short stories about the Midwest.

This week we added zines about grandmothers, zine fests, Kate Middleton, ways to conserve resources, kittens, visiting Portland (Oregon), IMATS, heart unfelt apologies, riot grrrl, mental health in library staff, and a queer teen about to start school at Hampshire in the early 1990s.

This week we added zines about snorkeling with eels, mental health in the library profession, zine life (with zine reviews). We also cataloged 11 zines made for Wendy Schor-Haim's First Year Seminar on witches.

This week we added zines about a year in the life of an artist, screen time, summer in Columbus Ohio, menopause, neighborhood girls, going out vs. staying in, public pancakes, mothering and daughtering, teaching college in Spokane, meanderings, making stuff, zine librarians and pedagogy, along with short stories from Sydney, Australia.

This week we added zines about queer sexuality, community care with regard to work burnout, what men seem to be like, witches and witchcraft, insomnia, dissociation, sewing and fashion, how to abort a fetus, self-care for introverts, the show Once Upon a Time, depressive behaviors in high school (e.g., cutting and bulimia) and poutine.

This week we added zines to our collection about working class queer love for Bruce Springsteen, pay equity, the off-line life of a White Plains couple, audio cassettes, sewing, poutine, dissociation, community reading of the book Educated, sex positivity, fashion, and feminist theory, and a Japanese/English bilingual zine about UK street cats.

This week we added zines about other zines, digital assistants and other smart technology, sex work legislation, cybernetics, screen names, wearable tech, and podcasting.

This week we added zines about the erasure of language, Tibetan exiles in India, violence against women, animal rights, getting involved with a cat (and her lesbian human), and the importance of school libraries, DIY DJing instructions, and a three-piece comic noir series.

This week we added zines about feminism, psychedelic drugs, being a teenage zine star, Trump administration survival strategies, patriarchal language construction, working in a library, food, good times with former Barnard Archivist Shannon O'Neill, and library cataloging.

This week we added zines about community care, avalanches in Chile, the security state, mother-son travel in Italy, hiking, women's self-defense, Barnard Life/NSOP 2018, the horrors of monogamy, studying abroad while low-income and accessing textbooks while low-income and photographs of Chilean women and flowers.

This week we added zines about feminist pedagogy, femmes in STEM, heavy metal in Ecuador, Nigerian email scams, people who love yonis, family and the disabled transgirl, stares and the disabled trans girl, teaching while distraught about Trump, and Ecuadoran girl problems.

This week we added zines about being transgender and disabled, the punk scene in Ecuador in the early 2000s, zine and other special collections at DePaul, MICA, Hennepin County, and other Minnesota libraries, gentrification in the Bronx, a disabled person's visit with their grandma, the significance of names to Barnard students, teaching with zines, Rocket from the Crypt fandom, and teaching with zines.

This week we added zines about masturbation, Team Dresch fandom and growing up queer, growing up Salvadoran, secrets, sex work, aging, growing up Hindu, this year's NYC Feminist Zinefest, last year's QTPOC Sister Spit tour, traveling in Japan, living in San Francisco, and behing a tourist in Europe.

This week we added zines about Columbia Lit Hum, the zine collection at Lehman College, mental illness and recovery, queer kink, misogyny in the Trump administration, child rheumatoid arthritis, a break-up, zine pedagogy, and turn-of-the-21st-century teen feminism. 

This week we added zines about ableist microaggressions, femme culture, the dark side of technology, camping, Asian American heritage, meeting Ursula Le Guin, popular culture, Quechua, Quechua for kids, dating and being slovenly, making really good cappuccinos, living in polyamory, and eating in Brazil.

This week we added zines about capitalism, cell phone filmmaking, Columbia trying to privatize a public park, femme art, shrinking cis men to pocket size, letter-writing, self-defense (in Spanish), how an incarcerated woman feels about being rehabilitated, dating and breaking up, being a sick witch, Tejana queers, and a comic about hot dogs and the 2018 NYC Feminist Zinefest program. 

This week we added zines about a Brooklyn College student protest, MICA's Decker Library erotic and zine collections, body hair, fire cider, friendship, critical information literacy, mullein, fears, a strange illness, disconnecting from news in Trump America, cats, and breastfeeding.

This week we added zines about anarchafeminists, microaggressions against women, having a parent with Alzheimer's disease, activism for girls, critical fashion studies, making art from scraps, working as a library clerk, an early 20th century Chinese immigrant woman, personal demons, and queer southerners, along with love poems and instructions for screenprinting in the Design Center.

This week we added zines about seeing shows, mental health in librarianship, an LA life in daily comics, a college student in Virginia, a college student in Canada, endless rain in Puget Sound, and feminist high schoolers' art and flash fiction about twentysomething life. 

This week we added zines about books, weather balloons, zine workshops, phallic fruits and vegetables, the Memphis College of Art zine collection, data privacy, parenting a kindergartener, feminist pop culture, self-care, in-between times, sexting, and 1996 punk culture.

This week we added zines about Korean skincare, punk skincare, high school friends becoming Nazis and/or amounting to nothing, pet cats, tales from a ska musician, depression, and gender dysmorphia. 

This week we added zines about a pet dog, raising a son under the patriarchy, memories of Puerto Rico, traveling solo as a sober lesbian, Transistor fan art, being queer and Muslim, youth protests, queerness and disability, fat feminism, and mental health.  

This week we added zines to our library about bicycle-riding with a four-year-old, the attack on Kim Kardashian, brujeria, hirsuteness, reading preferences, Native people in punk scenes, life off the gender binary, coming out to a Muslim immigrant mom, bicycling while brown, a DIY zine en español, and a "review zine with perzine tendencies."
