Greetings Fellow Barnard Bibliobabes!

My name is Phuong Uyen Nguyen but I go by Rita. My pronouns are (she/her/hers). I was born in Saigon, Vietnam but moved to Los Angeles, California when I was four years old. I’ve lived in Los Angeles ever since. My first language is Vietnamese but I also speak English and conversational Spanish. I identify as a first-generation Vietnamese-American student! I applied to Barnard College through early decision and am so incredibly happy to be here and in New York City. Below are a few fun facts about myself!

  • I’m a Libra Sun, Scorpio Rising and Sagittarius Moon!

  • My Hogwarts House is Ravenclaw

  • I’m an ENTJ

  • My favorite shows include How to Get Away with Murder, Scandal, Patriot Act and GILMORE GIRLS (I identify heavily with Paris Geller)

  • Some of  my favorite music artists are NIKI, Lauv, SZA, Doja Cat and Kehlani

  • I can’t drive (yes, from Los Angeles and can’t drive) so I LOVE the ease of New York’s  public transport

  • I enjoy Broadway shows, dance (both the physical action and watching shows!) books, poetry, fashion, makeup and Asian American culture

  • A few of my favorite writers at the moment are Lang Leav and Tia Tolentino

I’m a planned political science major and am working towards going to law school right after I graduate. I hope to intern for a firm or a couple of justice centers/non-profits in order to explore different legal avenues during my time as an undergrad. During high school, I was heavily involved in politics and activism work and worked with many organizations and institutions such as Key Club International, The American Civil Liberties Union, Affinity Magazine, The California State Assembly and High School Democrats of America. At Barnard, I’m involved in the Vietnamese Student’s Association, the Policy Committee within Barnard’s Student Government Association and the Columbia Pre-Law Society.
