You know that feeling you get on your birthday when you're seven years old and there's a giant wrapped gift box waiting for you when you wake up? That sweet mixture of excitement, nervousness, and curiosity about what amazing things you're going to find inside? That's how I felt when I opened this donation from A.j. Michel (whose website you can access by clicking her name!). There are 77 new zines waiting to enter our lovely collection… one might say we have "zines for days" here at the Barnard Library. Here are the highlights:
Are you on We Make Zines? If not, you should be! Check out the Feminist Zinesters Group there.
Come round, all ye children, to hear the tales of yesteryear... this short documentary, Last Century Zinesters, shows us what it was like to create zines in the mid-80s and 90s in Brazil through interviews and letter correspondences with many zinesters of that time. Grab some popcorn and sit yourself down by your newfangled computer machine to watch the story unfold after the jump!
Ready for a break from reading that stats textbook? The Punks is Hippies blog scans DIY punk fanzines in and puts them up for your perusal. They specialize in "out of print, hard to find, and in some cases unique, rare or exceedingly expensive" zines that we would otherwise not have access too - so delve in and get lost in the amazingness that is Punks is Hippies!
Wow, there's a lot of zine events coming up, including one in New York City September 24-25!
Cindy Crabb has been writing the influential, internationally distributed, autobiographical-feminist zine Doris since the early 90’s. Join us in celebrating her new book “The Encyclopedia of Doris,” which brings together the last 10 years of Doris zines with a ton of new writing at Bluestockings Bookstore, Sunday, September 25 at 7:00.
